A poet of gracious words feeds the soul
and pens the poems of lovers small and great,
of knights and squires, of dragons filled with hate,
of kings, of barons, lords–of their control.
With songs and odes, he meets the kingdom’s goal—
to compel the Knights to storm the hallowed gates
of God’s Jerusalem to eradicate
the infidels and caliphates of sheol.
When kings wage wars and lords despoil, poets
sing and write of their unheroic acts,
betrayals, murders, and misdeeds–Oh! it’s
just wiser for poets to conceal the facts.
May lovers instead fill my sweet sonnets,
as ’tis best to eschew Judgment’s deadly axe!
